How to Start an Online Business in 2023

Starting an online business can be a daunting prospect, especially if you’re not sure where to begin. But if you’re ready to break free from fear and start living the life you’ve always dreamed of, it’s time to take the plunge and get started. And I say “plunge”, because you’ll never be at a point where you feel 100% ready. Because of this, waiting for the right time will fail 8/10 times. (speaking from my own experience, as well as observing countless others.)

However, the good news is that starting an online business has never been easier, thanks to the overwhelming amount of tools and resources available to help you get up and running. Whether you’re looking to sell products, offer services, or create content, there are countless ways to turn your passions and skills into a profitable business. And just to clarify; when I say “profitable”, I’m not talking about millions of dollars overnight. Although becoming a very wealthy person is a lot more likely to happen when you run your own business (as opposed to working for others for a wage), it shouldn’t be the end-all-be-all goal from the start. “Profitable” simply means that you make a profit, meaning that you make more than you spend.

But where do you start?

Here are some tips to help you get started on your journey to building a successful online business:

1. Identify your strengths and passions

What do you love? What are your interests? What do you care about? Getting some awareness of this will help you massively as you embark on this journey. When you realize that what you do for fun in your spare time holds the potential to help another human, things change. You don’t have to be an expert, you simply need to be a chapter ahead in the “book”. Right now, there are people struggling with something you have already figured out. Once you have a list of your interests and skills, you are better able to align your business with something you actually care about.

2. Determine your target market

Who do you want to help? After having worked with 100s of entrepreneurs, I know that this might be one of the hardest things that people struggle with. But make it simple! The easiest person to help is YOU. But the you from before you learned what you know today! There is no need to complicate this.

3. Choose a business model

The list on this is endless. You can even create your own! But to help you a bit on this, here are a few alternatives:

  • e-Commerce
    You simply sell products
  • Digital Products
    You create resources, apps, or whatever else have you, that you sell to your customer
  • Services/Freelance
    You offer a service, like Webdesign, consulting, coaching, or anything that involves you doing something for the customer.
  • Affiliate Marketing
    You sell something for someone else and then get a percentage of the sale you make. The upside to this is that you don’t have to create a product yourself, and you can automate a lot of the work.

4. Build a Website

This is your hub for your online business, and it’s where you’ll attract and engage with your customers. If you don’t know how to code or design, get that out of your head. As mentioned before, there are more tools than demand these days, so finding a “no-code” solution is no more than a Google search away.

5. Create Content

If you don’t create posts, videos, blogs, or some sort of content that will point your audience toward your online business, you might as well be dead in the water. Today, being a content creator is one of the most lucrative things one can do, because of all the social media platforms out there. You don’t have to do ALL of them. Odds are that you already use a platform that you like, so just start creating valuable content there and you’re off to the races!

6. Use Social Media and Email Marketing

Social Media and Email Marketing are powerful tools for reaching and engaging with your audience. Use them well to share your content, promote your products and/or services and build relationships with your customers.

7. Stay up to date with business trends

Those who don’t pay attention, pay a toll. You’ll quickly fall behind if your ear is not to the ground in your industry. Things change quickly in our era, so being lazy when it comes to new innovations or trends is not a wise choice. BUT, you’ve aligned your business with your interests and passions, so that shouldn’t be an issue. If you really love what you do, you’re always looking to learn more.

8. Take advantage of free resources

There are countless free resources available to help you get started with your online business. Take advantage of these resources to learn new skills, get inspiration, and connect with other entrepreneurs.

9. Seek out mentors and advisors

Starting an online business can be overwhelming, especially if you’re doing it on your own. Consider seeking out mentors and advisors who can provide guidance and support as you get your business off the ground.

10. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

This takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it, whether it’s from friends, family, mentors, or other entrepreneurs. Here are a few additional things to consider as you get started:

  • Don’t be afraid to pivot. As you start building your online business, you may realize that your original business idea isn’t working out as you’d hoped. That’s okay! Don’t be afraid to pivot and try something new.
  • Stay true to your values. It’s important to build a business that aligns with your values and beliefs. This will help you stay motivated and passionate about what you’re doing, and it will also attract like-minded customers who share your values.
  • Keep learning. The world of online business is constantly evolving, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest trends and best practices. This could include things like SEO, content marketing, social media marketing, and more.
  • Be patient. Building a successful online business takes time and effort. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Stay focused on your goals and keep working hard, and you’ll eventually see the fruits of your labor.

You have a choice

Now, it’s up to you. Don’t be one of those people who constantly say “someday…” with a longing look in their eyes. Don’t be hoping to win the lottery when you can create your own! The world has so many opportunities today, it’s crazy! And honestly, I think that people NEED to get started on this journey, because with how the world is shifting these days, soon we might be left in a position where the only thing that could’ve allowed us to live happy and free lives was to live our lives independent of the systems that want to control it.
